Federal Opposition Leader Tony Abbott can’t be trusted to deliver on his $3.1 billion health promise given his legacy of funding cuts, Victorian Premier John Brumby says.

Mr Abbott unveiled a big spending health pledge on Thursday, which includes 2800 new hospital beds over four years.

But Mr Brumby, who fought hard for a better health deal for the states earlier this year, said the would-be prime minister could not be believed.

“The reality is that the big cuts to health spending in Victoria and in Australia occurred when Tony Abbott was the health minister,” Mr Brumby told reporters in Melbourne.

“Before Tony Abbott was health minister the commonwealth, the federal government, used to fund 50 per cent of the cost of running the health system.

“By the time he was finished as health minister the commonwealth was funding 40 per cent – he took a billion dollars out of the health system.

“He is a person who cut health spending and I for one wouldn’t be believing his election promise.”
